Come learn about Spartanburg’s African-American heritage and culture on June 17, 2017, at the 4th Annual Spartanburg Juneteenth. Please join us to enjoy music, food and fun from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. in Stewart Park.
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. It commemorates Union Soldiers arriving in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to announce that the Civil War had ended and the local population of enslaved people was free.
Since 2014, Spartanburg’s Juneteenth has continued the tradition of combining education and celebration of the Upstate’s African-American history and culture. This year’s celebration will include:
- A South Carolina BBQ Association sponsored rib cook-off, featuring $3,700 in prizes
- A presentation about the Emancipation Proclamation and local African-American history
- Spoken Word and live music performances, including gospel choirs
- Family-friendly food, games and activities
